The Torreón del Monje, the Monk's Tower, is a symbol of the seaside city of Mar del Plata: a Gothic-style stone tower on the rocks of Punta Piedras above the sea, built in 1904 at the initiative of the businessman Ernesto Tornquist, when the city was the favourite summer resort of wealthy Buenos Aires families. It was earlier known as the Belvedere and then the Pueyrredón Tower. A stone bridge links the tower to the coast road over the street, with waves breaking on the rocks below. Today the building holds a café and an ice-cream shop, with terraces looking over the bay, the beaches and the city. Seeing it from outside is free, and it is a familiar stop on a seafront walk between the beaches. It is nicest early in the morning or in the evening, when the summer crowds thin.
