The Tren de la Costa, the Coast Train, is a light tourist railway opened in 1995, running fifteen and a half kilometres along the Río de la Plata between Avenida Maipú station in Olivos and Delta station in Tigre, through elegant residential districts in Vicente López, San Isidro and San Fernando. It runs on an old railway line built between 1891 and 1896, once known as the «Tren del Bajo», which stopped in 1961 and lay abandoned until it was revived in the 1990s. Along the way are eleven stations, among them Barrancas, San Isidro near the town's historic centre, Punta Chica and Marina Nueva, and from the windows you glimpse garden trees and the broad river. The full trip takes about twenty-five minutes, trains run roughly every twenty to thirty minutes, and fares are tiny with the local SUBE card. You can get off at any station to wander, then carry on to Tigre and its delta.
