Três Pontas, «Three Tips», is a town of about 55,000 people in southern Minas Gerais, near Varginha, in the heart of one of Brazil's richest coffee-growing regions and among the state's top municipalities for farm income. It takes its name from the Serra de Três Pontas, the three-peaked range that served as a landmark for travellers, drovers and enslaved people crossing the area. The first explorers did not find the gold they came for, but the area sheltered quilombo settlements after the great Quilombo do Ambrósio was destroyed between 1740 and 1746. The singer and composer Milton Nascimento, one of the best-known voices of Brazilian music, grew up here, and the town celebrates him. Coffee farms and hills surround it, with the range that gave it its name overlooking the scene.
