Peer Gynt (theatre music for Ibsen), Morning Mood and In the Hall of the Mountain King became globally familiar passages even to those who never learn the composer's name โ used in countless films and adverts uncredited. Grieg himself turned down offers in Germany and greater Europe, choosing to return to Norway to live amid the nature that shaped his music โ a rare tale of national devotion among Europe's major musicians.

Troldhaugen โ Norwegian for Hill of the Trolls โ is the home of Edvard Grieg, Norway's most world-famous composer (1843-1907), of Peer Gynt Suite and the Piano Concerto most known across Scandinavia โ a timber villa he built (1885) whose direct view of Lake Nordรฅs inspired most of his late works, its contents kept precisely by his widow Nina until his final wish turned it a museum. His small separate hut (the komponisthytta) right at the lakeside โ where he actually composed away from the house's noise โ still holds his original piano, its view explaining why he chose this exact spot above anywhere else in Norway. The modern neighbouring museum hosts regular summer piano concerts (usually Wednesday noon) on Grieg's own instrument or an exact replica โ his and Nina's graves are carved into the lakeside rock directly below the hut, his final wish to remain where he composed.
