Tropea is a seaside resort town in the province of Vibo Valentia in Calabria, southern Italy, on the Gulf of Saint Euphemia in the Tyrrhenian Sea, at the centre of the stretch known as the «Coast of the Gods». It has about 5,700 residents, belongs to «The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy» and was named Italy's most beautiful village for 2021. Its historic centre stands on a sheer rock about 60 metres high, dropping straight into the sea. The town is known for its sandy beaches and for the red onion that carries its name. In front of it, on a separate rock in the sea, stands the sanctuary of Santa Maria dell'Isola, one of the best-known views in southern Italy. The old town's warm-coloured houses line the cliff edge, their balconies looking over a long white sand beach and very clear turquoise water. The rock with Santa Maria on top stands above the beach, and the green, winding coast stretches to the horizon. Visitors wander the old lanes and stand on the terraces overlooking the sea, then take the steps down to the beach to swim. Some climb to the rock and its garden, boats leave the harbour along the Coast of the Gods, and summer is very busy.
