A dormant volcanic crater in the heart of Curepipe on the central plateau of Mauritius, more than three hundred metres across and about eighty metres deep, cloaked in forest with a small lake at the bottom. A short paved road loops around the rim for walking or running, popular with locals in the early morning, with benches and viewpoints along the way. On clear days the rim gives a panoramic view over much of the island: the Port Louis mountains to the north, the south-western peaks, and sometimes the sea on the horizon. The air here is cooler and damper than on the coast because of the town's altitude. The visit is free and short, and pairs with a look around Curepipe and its famous model-ship workshops, on the way between the north and the south-west.
