The largest Zen monastery in Lam Dong province, built in 1993-1994 on Phuong Hoang hill above Tuyen Lam Lake, about 5 km south of Da Lat, with design input from the architect Ngo Viet Thu, who also designed the Independence Palace in Saigon. It belongs to the Truc Lam school of Zen founded in the thirteenth century and is still home to a community of monks and nuns. The grounds step down in gardens of flowers and pines around the halls and a bell tower, with wide views over the lake and the forested hills. Many visitors arrive on the Robin Hill cable car, which glides about 2.3 km over the pine forest from the edge of the city to the monastery gate; below, Tuyen Lam Lake can be explored on foot or by boat. Entry to the monastery is free. It is a place of practice, so dress modestly, keep quiet and stay out of the inner areas reserved for the monastic community.
