Tryavna is a small town in a green valley on the northern slopes of the Balkan Mountains, with an old cobbled square crowned by a white clock tower, two-storey white houses with dark timber balconies and an arched stone bridge over the river. It is known for its Bulgarian National Revival architecture and has 140 cultural monuments, museums and exhibitions. The first documents mentioning it date from the 12th century. During the Revival its crafts flourished, above all woodcarving and icon painting, giving it its own school of architecture and carving. The writer Pencho Slaveykov was born here. You wander the square and the clock tower, cross the stone bridge, visit the woodcarving museum and museum houses, and sit in the cafés of the old street. Forest and hill trails ring the town, and the little river runs between the houses under the trees, making evenings quiet and pleasant. It is about 14 km in a straight line east of Gabrovo and pairs well with Etar in one day.
