Tsomgo Lake, also known as Changu Lake, is a glacial lake in the state of Sikkim in northeast India, at 3,753 metres, about 16 km east of Gangtok in a straight line and 40 km by road. The lake freezes in winter, sometimes until May, and its surface changes colour with the seasons; it is held in great reverence by the people of Sikkim, and its name means «source of the lake» in Sikkimese. It is oval, about 24 hectares in area, and ringed by steep mountains that are snow-covered in winter and feed it with snowmelt in summer. Calm water spreads between rocky mountains topped with snow and cloud, the peaks mirrored on its surface on clear days, with colourful prayer flags fluttering along the shore. In winter snow covers the slopes around it. Visitors walk the shore and take in the reflected mountains; a permit arranged in Gangtok is required. It is cold at this altitude, so wear warm clothes and move slowly.
