The old street at the heart of Huangshan city (Tunxi), dating back to the Song dynasty about a thousand years ago; it runs for about a kilometre between Ming and Qing houses in the Huizhou style with white walls and carved timber, and in 2009 it was named one of China's famous historic streets. It is lined with shops selling local green tea, inkstones, brushes and the famous Huizhou ink, among the «Four Treasures of the Study» of Chinese calligraphy, alongside antique, calligraphy, painting and local sweet shops. It holds the old Tongderen traditional Chinese medicine pharmacy and a memorial hall to the eighteenth-century scholar Dai Zhen, and it makes a good evening stroll and shopping stop before or after the mountain and the old villages. The street is free and always open, per visitor guides. Lanzhou beef noodle shops in the city, usually run by Hui Muslims, are the easiest halal option.
