Tutóia is a coastal town of about 53,000 people in eastern Maranhão, its land spread between beaches, mangroves, dunes, lakes and rivers, and known as one of the main gateways to the Parnaíba River delta, the only open-sea delta in the Americas. The first explorations of this coast go back to 1571, when Nicolau Resende and his companions travelled it, and the contemporary writer Gabriel Soares de Sousa described the delta's channels and the bay later known as the Tutóia bar. The present municipality was founded on 29 March 1938. It lives from services and farming and is the state's second-largest coconut producer. Boat trips leave from here among the delta's islands and mangroves; it lies on the way between Parnaíba and the Lençóis Maranhenses, and its coast has dunes like those of the Lençóis.
