A mountain standing directly behind Opatija, separating **Istria** from the **Kvarner** gulf, its summit **Vojak** at **1,401 metres**. What makes it unusual is **how close it is to the sea**: the horizontal distance from shore to summit is only a few kilometres, so the mountain rises from sea level to 1,400 metres in a very short span. As a result you pass in half an hour''s drive from Opatija''s palms to mountain beech forest. That rapid gradient has produced exceptional botanical variety: **over 1,300 plant species** in a relatively small park, with Mediterranean and alpine species growing kilometres apart. On the summit stands a **stone tower** built in 1911, and from it on a clear day you see **the whole of Istria, the Kvarner gulf and its islands, the Velebit range, and the Italian and Slovenian Alps** — and sometimes Venice across the Adriatic. Note: you can **drive to near the summit** and walk a short way, or climb on foot from Lovran (hard, 4-5 hours). Note: the weather on top is entirely different from the coast — ten degrees colder and often in cloud.

Four, depending on what you want. **Opatija and the Lungomare** is the easiest — a half-hour bus, a walk by the water, and half a day covers it. **Učka** for a mountain and a view: by car, on a narrow winding summit road. **The island of Krk** is joined by a bridge (no ferry needed) and has the walled Frankopan town, beaches and clifftop Vrbnik — a full day by car. And **Risnjak National Park** for forest and genuine wilderness, about 35 km north. ⚠ Also within reach: **Pula** (about an hour and a half) and **Postojna** in Slovenia (about an hour, across the border) — both possible as a long day from Rijeka. ⚠ Carry passports going into Slovenia even though the border is Schengen.
