Udo is a small volcanic island off Jeju, with green fields divided by black lava-stone walls, white-sand beaches and turquoise water, high cliffs and sea caves, and a green hill at one end topped by a lighthouse. It lies 2.8 km off the Jeju coast and is the second largest island in the province. Its name means «cow island», as from the side it resembles a cow lying down. It is mostly flat, about 71 per cent farmland, with no rivers or springs, so islanders collect rainwater. More than two million people visited in 2016. Its Seobin Baeksa beach is known for pale sand made of coralline algae. You cross by ferry, then circle the island by bike or bus, climb Udobong hill for the cliffs and lighthouse, and try the island's famous peanut ice cream. It is about 5 km in a straight line northeast of Seongsan port and about 39 km east of Jeju City. Ferries may stop in strong wind.
