One of the largest private residences in the world, a grand palace of 347 rooms on Chittar Hill in Jodhpur; Maharaja Umaid Singh, whose name it bears, laid its foundation on 18 November 1929, and it was completed in 1943. It stands out for its stately Art Deco style blended with Indian touches, its soaring central dome and golden sandstone, and today it is divided into three: the residence of the former royal family, a luxury hotel and a museum open to visitors. The museum shows photographs and objects from the family's life, Art Deco clocks and furniture and a collection of the maharajas' vintage cars, and its gardens look across to the palace and, on the horizon, Mehrangarh Fort. Museum tickets are about ₹100 for foreigners, per visitor guides, bought at the entrance, while the hotel wings and the private palace are for guests and invitees only. A visit takes about an hour.
