A smart seaside suburb north of Durban and one of visitors' favourite places to stay, with a golden beach, a famous red-and-white lighthouse and a long promenade between hotels, restaurants and rock pools. The lighthouse was built in 1954 on the rocks by the beach and became the area's emblem and most photographed sight. Around it are tidal rock pools that reveal fish and shells at low water. The raised promenade runs about three kilometres along the coast and is loved for walking and jogging morning and evening. Swim in the guarded areas between the flags; the Indian Ocean is warm most of the year. The beach and promenade are free, and the area has large malls and seafood restaurants. It is a calm, safe base for exploring Durban, about twenty minutes' drive from the centre.
