A coastal town on the Red Sea in Tabuk province, between Al Wajh to the north and Yanbu to the south, about 130 kilometres from Yanbu. It has an old harbour, and some historians place it near the old port of Al-Hawra mentioned in accounts of early pilgrim journeys. In front of the town runs a coast of clear turquoise water, coral rock ledges and long sandy beaches, famous for its sunsets over the sea. The corniche has a promenade, gardens and family seating areas. Many islands lie off Umluj: three right opposite the town, the best known being Jabal Hassan and Umm Sahar, seven known as the Al-Fuwaydah islands, and some sixty more to the north. Boat trips head out to them for swimming and snorkelling. The corniche and beaches are free; boat trips are priced by their operators. The nearby Al Wajh domestic airport serves the town, and the weather is pleasant from autumn to spring, hot and humid in summer.
