The Upper Square is the main square of Olomouc, Czechia's sixth-largest city and a historic co-capital of Moravia, on the Morava river, about 64 km northeast of Brno and 210 km east of Prague in a straight line. The historic centre is protected as an urban monument reservation. In the middle of the square stands the Holy Trinity Column, the largest Baroque sculptural group in Czechia, built between 1716 and 1754 by artists and craftsmen who were all Olomouc citizens. It joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000 as the smallest standalone site on the list, at 200 square metres. Beside it stands the town hall with its astronomical clock and tall tower. The wide cobbled square is ringed by colourful Baroque and Renaissance facades and dotted with Baroque fountains named after ancient gods and heroes, among them the Caesar and Hercules fountains, alongside the modern Arion fountain with its bronze turtle. The stone and gilt column rises about 35 metres above the square. The square is the heart of the city, with cafés and seasonal markets, and walks start here to the Lower Square and the cathedral. Olomouc is far less crowded than Prague; try the local cheese, the strong-smelling Olomoucké tvarůžky.
