Upsala is one of the largest glaciers in South America, flowing from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field into Lago Argentino inside Los Glaciares National Park. It is about 54 kilometres long, the continent's third-longest glacier, and about 13 kilometres wide. A Swedish geologist named it in 1908 after Uppsala University, which sponsored the first glaciological study of the region. It can only be reached by boat, on a long cruise from Puerto Punta Bandera, about 45 kilometres from El Calafate, among huge floating icebergs of startling blue that break from its front and drift across the lake. Trips usually include the Spegazzini glacier, known for its tall ice walls. The outing takes about ten hours or more door to door and needs no special fitness. The national park fee is paid separately at the entrance; bring warm, windproof clothes.
