Uruçuca is a municipality in southern Bahia, between Ilhéus and Itacaré; on its coast lies Serra Grande, known for wild beaches and lookouts over the ocean, while the town itself stands inland among cacao farms and Atlantic forest. It began in 1906 as a village called Água Preta, «black water», founded by farming families who built their homes near a dark-coloured river; it became a district of Ilhéus in 1933 before becoming a municipality under its present name. The municipality holds 44% of the Serra do Conduru State Park, known for the exceptional biodiversity of its Atlantic forest, and part of the Lagoa Encantada and Rio Almada protected area. Its beaches include Barra do Rio Tijuípe, Pompilho and Pé de Serra, and outings include the Zé Maria waterfall and the Robalo pool.
