Uspallata is a village in a lovely valley on the road across the Andes from Mendoza to Santiago in Chile, about 100 kilometres west of Mendoza. The old Transandine railway, now disused, once passed through it, and coloured mountains and rows of poplars along the roads surround it. A kilometre and a half from the village stand Las Bóvedas, old egg-shaped kilns once used to smelt metals from nearby mines, with a small museum; some of their firebricks still bear the stamp of a works in England's West Midlands. Horse and bike rides into the valley leave from the village. Uspallata is a good stop on the way to Aconcagua and Puente del Inca, or an overnight on a trip to the border. The drive from Mendoza passes the Potrerillos reservoir and the Mendoza river valley.
