The Vale da Lua, the Valley of the Moon, is a stretch of the São Miguel River where the water has carved the grey rock over millions of years into curves, holes and channels that recall the surface of the moon, hence the name. Between the rocks are clear natural pools and small waterfalls. It lies about 35 kilometres from Alto Paraíso de Goiás, reached by a 4-kilometre dirt road and then a short trail of about 1.2 kilometres there and back. The water is cold and the rock slippery, so walk carefully and follow the staff's instructions, especially in the rainy season, when the river can rise quickly. The site lies outside the national park, under separate management with its own ticket: about R$50 since February 2025, free for children under 7 and half price for seniors and local residents. It opens daily 8:00-17:00, last entry 16:00.
