The Vale do Pati, along the Pati River in the municipalities of Palmeiras, Andaraí and Mucugê, lies entirely within Chapada Diamantina National Park and is one of its great draws: a 12,300-hectare valley that has been called one of the best treks in the world. Once a coffee-growing area, it has a network of trails of about 62 km usually walked in four days, winding over green hills, sometimes slippery and muddy, up to plateaus and viewpoints such as the Mirante do Vale do Pati. Its rocks, 1.6 to 1.2 billion years old, form waterfalls, caves, hills and sheer walls. Because the soil holds little rainwater, heavy rain can turn its streams into sudden, violent and dangerous floods. The valley has local guides, and the trek needs preparation and good fitness.
