**A catastrophe that rebuilt four islands — and explains why their towns look modern.** ✅ **The event**: in **August 1953** a series of earthquakes struck the southern Ionian islands, **culminating in a shock above magnitude 7** centred near Kefalonia. ⚠ **The destruction was near-total**: **Kefalonia, Zakynthos and Ithaca** had their towns and villages destroyed **at rates approaching ninety per cent** in places; ✅ **Corfu to the north survived** by distance. ⚠ **The social consequence**: **mass emigration** the islands never recovered from — **which is why Ithaca has so few people today**. ✅ **The rebuilding**: reconstruction followed earthquake-resistant standards, ⚠ **and a plain modern style in most places** — **which is why the towns of Kefalonia and Zakynthos look modern** despite their long history. ✅ **Deliberate exceptions**: **Fiskardo** in northern Kefalonia **survived** because the shock was weaker there; **and Vathy and villages on Ithaca were deliberately rebuilt in the traditional style** by decision — **so what you see here is a faithful copy, not an original**. ✅ **It also explains** Lefkada's earthquake-proof architecture.
