Veľký Rozsutec is a 1,610-metre mountain in the Malá Fatra range in the Žilina Region of northern Slovakia, about 26 km east of Žilina in a straight line, near the village of Terchová and the Vrátna valley. The peak lies in the northern part of the range, Krivánska Malá Fatra, and is part of Malá Fatra National Park and the Rozsutec National Nature Reserve, protected since 1967. Many endangered plants and animals live on and around the mountain, some found nowhere else, along with rare karst terrain. The limestone mountain's sharp rocky summit rises above beech and fir forest and mountain meadows, looking quite different from the rounded grassy peaks around it. From the top a wide view opens over the Malá Fatra range and the valleys and villages below. Hikers climb to the summit on marked trails, some passing through narrow gorges with ladders and chains, such as the Jánošíkove diery route. The climb needs good fitness and dry weather, and some trails may close seasonally to protect nature, so check before setting out.
