Venda Nova do Imigrante is a mountain town in central Espírito Santo, about 110 kilometres from Vitória at 733 metres, with some 25,000 people; it is known for farm tourism and the heritage of its Italian settlers, near the Pedra Azul park. After slavery ended, the large Portuguese-owned farms were split into plots and sold to dozens of Italian families; the first settlers, about twenty families, arrived around 1892 from the province of Treviso. The town became a municipality of its own, separate from Conceição do Castelo, in 1988. It keeps its Italian traditions alive in festivals, the best known being the Polenta Festival, and in dances and choral singing. Visitors come to tour family farms and buy cheese, sausages, coffee and preserves, and for the many viewpoints of its rugged terrain and the waterfalls on its rivers.
