Veranópolis is a town of about 26,000 people in the Serra Gaúcha of Rio Grande do Sul, near Bento Gonçalves, nicknamed Brazil's «capital of longevity» for its people's high life expectancy, and the «Princess of the Valleys». The plateau was Kaingang land until the nineteenth century; settlement began in 1884 with the arrival of Italian immigrants under the empire's plan to populate the region, and it grew into a thriving farming town now counted among Brazil's highest in living standards. Its sights include the Cascata dos Monges park, with viewpoints over the waterfall and valley, the Espigão do Belvedere lookout over the Rio das Antas, the Gruta Selvagem cave once home to the Kaingang, the House of Culture with its history museum, and the birthplace of the actor José Lewgoy, now a small museum about his life.
