A regional park immediately north of Vilnius combining forest, river bluffs and the valley of the Neris, and holding the historic Verkiai Palace. Its closeness to the city is the advantage: you reach genuine forest and walking trails in about twenty to thirty minutes from central Vilnius by public transport. Vilnius is among the greenest European capitals, with roughly half its area under forest and green space, and this park is a large part of that. Verkiai Palace at its centre was built at the end of the eighteenth century for Bishop Massalski on a site that had been a seat of the grand dukes of Lithuania. Most of the complex was demolished in the nineteenth century and only two wings and the stables remain, but the site sits on a bluff overlooking the river valley. The park also includes a nature reserve, marked trails and viewpoints. Practical points: entry to the park and trails is free. Reach it by bus from the centre. The palace may be in private or institutional use — check before planning an interior visit.

Yes, and it is among Europe's greenest capitals by that measure: roughly half the city's area is forest, park and open space, and you can reach real woodland from the centre in half an hour. That is unusual for a capital and is among the things that most surprises visitors.
Pavilniai Regional Park east of the city with its red sandstone bluffs, the Karoliniškės reserve west of the centre which is the closest of all, and Trakai Historical National Park half an hour away with its famous island castle. Each covers a half day.
