Winter and Mondays cut the water, leaving bus 303 from centre or car — and the castle alone gives three generous hours with its walls. Planning honesty though: half its magic is the full water day — the flexible should match steamer season, and whoever can't has the karst as stronger rival for a limited day.

Brno's river castle and its loveliest arrival by water: vast Veveří (Moravia's second largest) has ridden its rock spur over the Brno dam since the thirteenth century — princely hunt, Hussite fortress, barracks; even young Winston Churchill honeymooned here in 1908 (the plaque stands). Restoration is ongoing, so its character is a working castle: furnished wings on guided tours, walls and towers walked for forest-and-lake views, knights' and craft festivals filling its summer — no Schwarzenberg polish, but old stone's honesty. The true point is the full day: the Brno lake steamer from the Přístaviště dam quay winds ninety minutes of wooded coves to the castle pier — tram, boat, castle, return by bike or boat: the Brno people's best-loved summer day outright, and folding into it is their hospitality to a visitor.
