A yacht marina on the central Auckland waterfront, transformed from an old fishing and trading harbour into a lively area of restaurants, cafés and promenades when it became the base for the America's Cup sailing race around the turn of the millennium, earning Auckland the name City of Sails. Luxury yachts and historic racing boats moor in the harbour, sculpture-lined walkways run along its edges, and sailing trips on real racing yachts leave from here, along with whale and dolphin watching cruises. A lifting footbridge connects it to the redeveloped Wynyard Quarter, with parks, playgrounds, the fish market and its restaurants. The harbour is also home to the New Zealand Maritime Museum, telling the story of Polynesian and European seafarers. Wandering is free, and it is loveliest in the evening when the restaurants fill and the quays light up. It is a short walk from the Sky Tower and the ferry terminal.
