The Vietnamese Women's Museum, run by the Vietnam Women's Union, tells the country's history and culture through the lives of its women across all 54 of its ethnic groups. It opened in 1995 in a four-storey building at 36 Ly Thuong Kiet Street, a short walk south of Hoan Kiem Lake, and after a renovation from 2006 to 2010 it reopened as a museum centred on women and gender. Three permanent exhibitions fill the floors: Women in Family, on marriage customs, childbirth and daily life in different communities; Women in History, on women's roles in the country's history, including the wars of the 20th century; and Women's Fashion, with clothing, textiles and jewellery from many ethnic groups and the weaving and indigo-dyeing skills behind them. Temporary exhibitions on present-day themes change through the year. An audio guide in English, French, Japanese and Korean leads to more than 60 objects, and the visit takes an hour and a half to two hours. It is one of the best-presented museums in the city and pairs well with the Museum of Ethnology.
