The Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde is Denmark's national museum for ships of the prehistoric and medieval periods. It overlooks an inlet of Roskilde Fjord, about 31 km in a straight line from Copenhagen. At its heart is a permanent display of the Skuldelev ships, five original Viking ships deliberately sunk around 1070 in Roskilde Fjord to block its main channel and raised in 1962. They are five different types, from cargo ships to warships, and the museum was built in 1969 to show them. In the late 1990s work to extend the boatyard uncovered nine more medieval ships, the largest such find in Northern Europe. Inside a wide glass hall facing the fjord lie the dark wooden hulls. Outside, reconstructed ships with sails and wooden masts moor in the harbour, and a boatyard builds new ships using old methods. In summer you can sail on the fjord aboard a reconstructed ship. The visit pairs easily with nearby central Roskilde.
