Villa de Merlo is a resort town at the foot of the Sierras de Comechingones in northeast San Luis province, at about 800 metres, home to some twenty-five thousand people, known for its mild microclimate and clean air, which have made it a place to rest. Green hills and clear streams running among rocks surround it, visited on the «small circuit» outings to Rincón del Este and Piedra Blanca, and to the Mirador del Sol lookout at 1,470 metres, with a wide view over the town and valley. Its best-known sight is the «Algarrobo Abuelo», a giant carob tree with twisted branches said to be about 1,200 years old. Wandering is free. The town is about 190 kilometres from San Luis city and 250 from Córdoba, good for a stay of a few days walking in the hills.
