On a green promontory thrusting into Lake Como where its arms divide stands Villa del Balbianello — the lake's most beautiful villa by a consensus that includes Hollywood: Anakin and Padmé married here in Star Wars and James Bond convalesced here in Casino Royale, centuries after a retired cardinal built it (1787) on a monastery's remains, its loggias opening the lake's widest views. Its terraced gardens are the icon: plane trees pruned to candle shapes, cypresses and wisteria gripping the rock, and the summit loggia open on both sides — the photo frame that pursues every visitor to the lake. Inside, the villa tells its extraordinary last resident: Guido Monzino, first Italian to lead an Everest expedition, who filled it with exploration libraries and relics down to his polar sledge — and willed it entire to the national trust FAI.
