The Ernesto Bachmann Museum in Villa El Chocón is a municipal museum of palaeontology, archaeology and history, opened on 10 July 1997. It was created after the discovery of Giganotosaurus, one of the largest carnivorous dinosaurs in the world, found in July 1993 some 18 kilometres southwest of town by the amateur Rubén Darío Carolini, after whom the dinosaur is named. The museum shows the original skeleton and a complete replica, about 13 metres long, along with other fossils and artefacts from the area. On the shores of the nearby Ezequiel Ramos Mexía reservoir, dinosaur footprints preserved in rock can be seen on short tours. It opens daily from 09:00 to 19:00. The town sits on the shore of the large reservoir, with beaches and water activities in summer, and makes a day trip from Neuquén city.
