Villa Pehuenia is a small mountain village on the north shore of Lake Aluminé, at about 1,200 metres in western Neuquén, near the Icalma pass into Chile. It is named after the pehuén, the araucaria, the ancient Andean tree with symmetrical branches whose forests cover the hills around the village, and Mapuche communities live in the area. Around it lie two glacial lakes, Aluminé and Moquehue, with clear blue water and quiet beaches, mountains snow-capped much of the year, and above it the Batea Mahuida volcano. In summer visitors paddle, fish, hike and cycle among the araucaria forests; in winter they ski and sled. The village is small, calm and far from the crowds, several hours' drive from Neuquén city. Wandering the village and lakeshores is free.
