A timber walkway above an emerald river: Vintgar Gorge, 4 km from Bled, is a 1.6 km canyon cut by the Radovna river between rock walls a hundred metres high — and since 1893 you walk on wooden galleries and bridges hung over the roaring turquoise water, from pool to rapid to the 13-metre Šum waterfall at its end. The route has been one-way since 2020 (enter at Podhom, exit at the waterfall), returning to the entrance on forest paths through villages or by shuttle — ninety minutes for the gorge itself, half an hour back. The water is cold and the shade constant, making it the best refuge on a hot summer afternoon. It closes in winter for snow and rockfall, and crowds at summer midday: arriving at opening gives you the gorge to yourself.
