The sand arc
A near-complete circle of white sand between two rocky arms.
**A bay in the shape of a perfectly rounded omega** — white sand drawing an almost complete arc between two rocky arms, and among the most photographed sights from the air in Greece. The name means **"the cow's belly"**, from its rounded shape. The bay is **shallow and entirely sheltered** because its opening is narrow — so the water is still, warm and almost waveless. Behind it lies **Gialova lagoon** — the most important bird reserve in the southern Balkans and a staging point on the migration route between Europe and Africa, where flamingos and hundreds of species are recorded. ✅ Above it on the rock are **Nestor's Cave** — where legend has Hermes hide Apollo's cattle — and the Frankish **Palaiokastro**. ⚠ And there are no facilities here at all: **no umbrellas, no tavernas, no water and no shade**.

**An interaction of sea, wind and sand — a natural formation rarely this regular.** ✅ **The mechanism**: the bay is protected by two rocky arms leaving a **narrow opening**. Waves entering through it **refract and bend**, curving inwards and distributing sand **evenly around the whole inner perimeter**. When the opening is narrow and the bay relatively round, **wave energy arrives equally at every point on the shore** — so sand settles in a **balanced arc** rather than a straight line. ✅ **Wind** completes the work: it carries dry sand landward and builds the **dunes**, which in turn lock the shape and stop it spreading. ✅ **The result**: a long-term balance between sand arriving and sand leaving, **so the arc holds**. ⚠ **Which is why the dunes are not decoration but part of the system** — damaging them opens the form and changes the beach.
**A first-rank bird reserve — and timing decides whether you see anything.** ✅ **What it is**: **Gialova lagoon** is a shallow brackish coastal lake behind the Voidokilia dunes, **the most important birdwatching site in the southern Balkans** and protected within the European sites network. ✅ **Why it matters**: it lies on the **migration route** between Europe and Africa — a **staging post** where birds rest and feed before or after crossing the Mediterranean. **Hundreds of species** are recorded, including **flamingos**, herons and migrating waterbirds, along with a rare **African chameleon** living around it, the only one in Europe. ⚠ **Timing is decisive**: **spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November)** are the migration seasons — when it fills. ⚠ **In midsummer** the water drops and the birds thin out sharply; anyone arriving in August expecting flamingos **will be disappointed**. ✅ **What you need**: **binoculars**, an early morning and quiet — with the viewing paths around the edges.
