The masks are the strongest thing in it: huge wooden faces used in winter processions with roots reaching back before Christianity. The museum is small and traditional in its presentation, which suits its content. Its value is in offering the other face of Salzburg: not Mozart, the Baroque and the festival, but the rural valleys that actually shaped the region. Practical points: it sits inside the Hellbrunn grounds, so it is visited with the palace and its trick fountains in a single half day. The climb to the hill is short but uphill. Hours are seasonal and it may close in winter — check before going.
