Vrátna dolina is a valley in the Malá Fatra mountains of northern Slovakia, about 3 km from the village of Terchová in the Žilina Region and about 22 km east of Žilina in a straight line. It covers about 36 square kilometres. The valley has four access points: Tiesňavy, Stará dolina, Nová dolina and Starý dvor. It is one of Slovakia's most visited tourist and ski destinations, with a resort between 600 and 1,550 metres and 16 slopes. Since 2006 a cable car with eight-seat gondolas has run from Vrátna up to Chleb at 1,490 metres. The valley opens between green peaks covered in forest and meadows, topped by sharp rocky summits, with flocks of sheep grazing in the meadows. In winter snow covers the slopes, and in autumn the forests turn gold and red. Visitors ride the cable car up to the ridge to hike the summit trails with wide views, ski in winter and cycle in summer. Many arrive through the narrow rocky Tiesňavy gorge at the valley's entrance.
