**The only mountain lake in the Low Tatras** — which on its own is why it is a destination, since glacial lakes are common in the High Tatras and all but absent here. It lies at about **1,113 metres** in the Demänovská valley, ringed by dense spruce on the flank of Chopok. It is small — only around 750 square metres — and shallow, but its setting among the trees and the reflection of the slopes on it is the picture people come for. It was formed not by ice, as the High Tatra lakes were, but by a **landslide** damming a small watercourse — an entirely different origin. A short, level **circular path** goes round it in half an hour, one of the easiest walks in the whole region — right for children and for anyone who does not want a climb. Note: **the car park is very close**, which is why the lake fills on summer weekends. Early morning is far quieter. Note: **swimming is forbidden** — the area is protected.

The valley gathers most of what the Low Tatras offer into one place, about an hour and a quarter from Poprad by car. A tested order: the **Demänovská Cave of Liberty** in the morning — book or arrive early, since tours are limited and fill up. Then **the lake** and its short circular path with a break. In the afternoon the **Jasná cable car to Chopok**, if the sky is clear and the wind calm. ⚠ **Parking is paid and full on holidays** — set out before nine. ⚠ The **Ice Cave** is the alternative if the Liberty tours are booked out, and it is shorter.
