Wadi Hidan is a valley in Madaba Governorate, central Jordan, in the Dhiban district, about 21 km south of Madaba in a straight line and about 30 km by road. It is one of the governorate's main tourist sites. The valley is rich in water, especially in winter, when a strong stream runs through it. Its course runs about 35 km to an area called Al-Malaqi, where it meets the waters of Wadi Mujib, before flowing into the Dead Sea. Varied wildlife lives in the area, including hyenas, hares and mongooses, and many migrating birds shelter here thanks to its wetlands. The valley drops from a bare brown desert plateau into a narrow gorge between huge smooth yellow sandstone boulders, with clear water running into green pools and small waterfalls spilling between the rocks. Thick green plants and pink oleander grow along the banks, a striking contrast with the desert around. Hikers climb down to the valley floor and walk through the water between rocks and pools, an adventurous trip that needs fitness and water shoes. It is wise to go with a local guide and to avoid the valley in winter or when rain is possible because of flash floods.
