An island of green hills and sandy beaches in the Hauraki Gulf, about forty minutes by ferry from central Auckland, and one of the city's favourite day trips for locals and visitors alike, with sunny weather and a relaxed feel. Its north coast has calm white beaches such as Oneroa, Onetangi and Palm Beach, with clear water for summer swimming, overlooked by houses and cafés on the hills. Inland are olive groves, farms and small art galleries. Coastal walking tracks run between cliffs and secluded coves, and you can get around by local bus or by hiring a car or an electric bike. The main village of Oneroa has restaurants and craft shops. The island is free, with a return ferry fare from the downtown wharf. Go on a sunny weekday to avoid the summer weekend crowds.
