A temple in the countryside west of Hua Hin, famous for a giant statue of Luang Pu Thuat, one of Thailand's most revered monks, who lived in the seventeenth century and is credited with many miracles. The seated bronze statue is among the largest of him in the world, raised on a high base reached by a broad stair, with fields and hills around. In front of the statue stand giant elephant sculptures, under whose bellies visitors pass for luck by local custom, and a prayer hall with figures of monks and a place for offerings. Around the temple is a small market of food, fruit and amulets, and the garden has a fish pond. Entry is free and it is open all day. Modest dress is expected: shoulders and knees covered. Early morning or late afternoon is best, as the square is in full sun. It needs no more than an hour, so pair it with a trip into the countryside west of Hua Hin or with Rajabhakti Park. It is easiest by car or taxi from town.
