Wat Phou Salao is a hilltop temple above the Mekong, across the river from the town of Pakse in southern Laos. A large golden Buddha sits on the summit looking out over the town, a long stairway climbs through the trees, and from the top there is a wide view over the river and town. The temple is fairly modern rather than an ancient site. From the top you see Pakse and the long Lao–Nippon Bridge across the Mekong, with the river plain and mountains beyond. A long stairway of about 600 steps leads up, some of them high and narrow, or a road winds about 4.9 km around the hill. You climb the stairs, or come up by car, then stand on the summit to take in the river and the town. Late afternoon is best, when the sun sets over the water. The temple is about 3.2 km in a straight line southwest of central Pakse, across the bridge. Bring water if you take the stairs, as it is hot. It is a place of worship, so cover your shoulders and knees, take off your shoes before entering the hall, and do not point your feet at Buddha images.
