An old fishing village at the tip of Sydney's eastern peninsula, where the harbour meets the Pacific, combining a calm bay of clear water and moored boats with towering ocean cliffs on the other side, minutes away on foot. From the bay a short path climbs to Gap Park on the edge of sheer rock cliffs dropping into the ocean, with dramatic views of the surf. To the north the South Head walk passes small beaches to the red-and-white Hornby Lighthouse at the harbour mouth. Points along the walk look over the harbour entrance and North Head opposite, and back to the city and its bridge on the horizon. The bay is known for fish and chips on the beach and for sunsets behind the city. It is free, and the best way there is the ferry from Circular Quay, a ride across the whole harbour. It makes a perfect half day away from the busy centre.

To the lighthouse.
And sunset.
