Las Vegas's most famous sign, funded in May 1959 and designed by Betty Willis, stands in the median of Las Vegas Boulevard South. Many consider it the official southern start of the Strip, and it has become a symbol of the city in photos and films. It is a classic roadside sign 7.6 metres tall, a white diamond with red letters spelling «Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada», topped by a glowing red and yellow star. In front of the sign is a small car park and a pavement area for photos, where visitors queue for souvenir pictures, especially in the evening when the bulbs around its letters light up. Visiting is free at any time. The queue gets long at busy times, so go early in the morning or at night, and use the designated car park rather than crossing the busy boulevard.
