One of Quanzhou's oldest and best-known streets, which flourished under the Song about a thousand years ago when the city was a world port; it runs west through the heart of the old town from near the famous twin stone pagodas. It is lined with traditional red-brick houses whose roof ridges sweep up like swallow tails in the southern Fujian style, small shops, cafés and old-style bakeries, with old lanes branching off that keep the city's everyday life. The street is busy with stalls selling Quanzhou's popular snacks, and from the rooftops of some cafés there's a lovely view of the twin pagodas at sunset, one of the city's best-known images. Wandering is free; it's very crowded on holidays and weekend evenings, so come in the morning. Many local snacks contain pork, so ask about ingredients before ordering or choose halal restaurants.
