Baden-Baden's Wildgehege is not a zoo in the usual sense but a fenced area of forest on a hillside east of the town, where native Black Forest animals live in close to natural conditions: red deer, fallow deer, ibex and wild boar. The idea differs fundamentally from a zoo: there are no cages and no display buildings, only a wide perimeter fence and animals moving freely within real woodland โ which means you may walk the whole trail without seeing anything, if the animals are at the far end or hidden among the trees. Patience and quiet are part of the experience rather than a flaw in it. The path runs through the forest with viewing platforms and places to sit, and connects to the wider network of walking trails around Baden-Baden. Entry is free and there are no fixed hours. The best time for sightings is early morning or before sunset, when the animals are more active and closer to the open ground.
