A gleaming white stupa on a wooded hilltop above Phewa Lake, built by a Japanese Buddhist order as one of the Peace Pagodas it has raised around the world as a call for peace, and now one of Pokhara's finest viewpoints. The dome sits on two white terraces with stairs and white railings, crowned by a gilded spire, with golden Buddha figures in niches on its sides, gifts from various Asian countries. Visitors walk quietly around it on the upper terrace. Its terrace offers the area's best view: all of Phewa Lake with its colourful boats below the hill, Pokhara on its shore, and behind them the snowy wall of the Annapurnas on clear days. Sunset here is superb. Get there by boat across the lake and a forest trail of about an hour, or by car to a nearby car park. Entry is free. Temples and stupas are living places of worship: dress modestly, walk clockwise around Buddhist stupas and remove shoes where asked. The clearest months are October to December and March to April; in the June-September monsoon the mountains hide behind cloud.
