A wide volcanic field in northern Heilongjiang with fourteen volcanoes, twelve of them formed millions of years ago and two that last erupted in 1719–1721, under the Kangxi Emperor, making them among the youngest volcanoes in China. Their lava blocked the river and formed five linked lakes, which gave the place its name, Wudalianchi, «five connected lakes». It has been called «an open textbook of volcanoes», with fields of frozen lava like a stormy sea, craters reached on boardwalks, the largest being Laoheishan, cold mineral springs whose water local people have long drunk, and lakes with boat trips; it has been a UNESCO Global Geopark since 2004. Tickets cost CNY 120 from May to October and CNY 80 in winter, valid for three days at the main sights, with electric carts extra, and it is open from 8 am to 5 pm in summer, per visitor guides.
